| Youth Ministry - Affirming Teens - Part 1 |
1. Jar of Affirmation. Place a jar in the middle of your classroom floor with a teen’s name taped to it. Give each group member a piece of paper and a pencil to write an encouraging note to the person whose name is on the jar. The note might be about a mission experience, personal friendship, or just a note of appreciation. The only rule is that the note be positive. When all notes are completed, have the teens place them in the jar for the teen to take home and read. Next week have another jar with another teen’s name on it. Do this each week until all teens have been encouraged.
2. A Penny for Your Thoughts. How many teens are in your group? ______ Multiply that number by three and bring that many pennies to class. (25 teens = 75 pennies.) Have your group sit in a circle, and tell them that you are about to toss some pennies into the middle of the circle. The goal if for them to collect as many as possible - no stealing pennies from others. When all the pennies are picked up, that indicates the number of positive comments they must make to other teen members. If a teen collects five pennies, they are required to encourage five people. If they have one, they encourage one. Place a jar in the middle of the room for teens to place their pennies into after each affirmation they share.
3. Poster Praise. Get a sheet of poster board for each teen. At the top of each board write “I thank God for (teen’s name) because...” Hang these boards up all over your room. During your class or devotional give each teen a marker and have them fill in the praise on each board. By the time they’re done each teen should have written on everyone’s poster board.
